Hardy Water Lilies

Gloriosa

Gloriosa used to be considered the very best Red Hardy Water Lily. It is indeed very bright and beautiful but sometimes is prone to crown rot. This free flowering lily has cup-like, bright red flowers and lush green foliage. Although a pure red color it is a small plant with smaller flowers. Does fairly well in shadier pond or water gardens but of course is best to have full sun.

It is recommended to plant in a pot with a heavy clay or mixture of DG. They do best in 2 gallons or more but Gloriosa does fine in a 1 gallon pot for a few years. Fertilizing every 2-3 months will ensure the best performance with healthy green leaves and plenty of flowers.  Hardy lilies will have their leaves all year.

Aquatic plants can make a big difference not only in the look of your pond but the balance as well. Some people do not even use a pond filter and will depend on the pond plants to shade and use extra nutrients so the pond or water garden  is more natural.
