Yellow Hardy Water Lily: Mexicana

Yellow Hardy Water Lily: Mexicana

Mexicana is not a true hardy water lily, however it will winter over in zone 5 and above. The flowers are a very bright yellow and held high above the water, similar to tropical water lilies.

Yellow Hardy Lilies

Among the yellow hardy lilies, this is traditionally regarded as the brightest yellow. N. mexicana is a dwarf lily, which produces runners, allowing it to form large colonies. Best if planted in a tray, where it will have room to grow. Leaves are medium green and are lightly variegated with marroon blotches.

Mexicana Water Lily

Mexicana Water Lily (Nymphaea ‘Mexicana’) has small bright yellow blossoms that bloom like tropical water lilies, and whose lovely flowers are open from midday, to late afternoon. When crowded together, its leaves will often rise above the waters surface.
First discovered in Mexico, which accounts for the species name, Mexicana Water Lily is also known as the Yellow Water Lily, Sun-lotus or Banana Water-lily, and easily grows in marshes, readily invading canals and other shallow waterways, often becoming a great nuisance if left unchecked in an open ecosystem, such as a farm pond or lake.
